Test Bed : UAV Synthetic Task

The CERTT Lab houses a Synthetic Task Environment (STE) for studying team cognition. The premier task in this STE is a simulation of Uninhabited Air Vehicle (UAV) Ground Control operations.

In the UAV-STE a three-person team controls the UAV for the purpose of taking reconnaissance photos. The task is based on the actual operations of the Air Force’s Predator UAV.

The synthetic task environment in made up of four industrial Participant Consoles and one Experiment Console.

The UAV synthetic task environment provides a context to measure team cognition. Our long-term goal is to develop, validate, and modify our measures in order to use them for real-time assessment of team performance to facilitate opportunistic intervention.

The CERTT Lab has conducted distributed and real-time interactive demonstrations with other laboratories. Using DIS (distributed interactive simulation) protocol and the Internet-II, one such demonstration was between the CERTT Laboratory and the CSTARS simulation facility (an AWACS simulator) at Brooks Air Force Base and involved a multi-laboratory scenario involving AWACS, F-16s, and UAVs.
