Incident Command
Our observations of various Incident Command Centers located
in major U.S. airports indicated that the design of these centers may thwart
attempts to respond to critical events in an efficient and safe manner.

- Characteristics
of Incident Command Tasks
- Involve complex
and distributed systems of technology and people operating
in a high tempo environment
- Are unexpected,
and thus are ad hoc
- Are performed
by ad hoc teams who likely have little experience working together
- Purpose
of our observations
- To understand
the complex tasks involved in airport incident command operations
- To identify potential areas for system improvement through user-centered
design
-
Examples of Airport Incidents
- Security
Breaches
- Severe Weather
- Terrorist
Threats
- Plane Crashes
