About the CERTT Lab

The Cognitive Engineering Research on Team Tasks (CERTT) Lab specializes in
identifying and researching problems associated with socio-technical systems.

What is cognitive engineering? It’s an approach to the design of complex cognitive systems that involves understanding cognition in context and applying this under-standing to create systems that are safer, easier to use, and more effective.

What is a socio-technical system? It is a mixture of people and technology interacting in a complex environment.

What does the CERTT Lab do to study socio-technical systems?
What is team cognition? It is an emergent property of teams that results from the interplay of individual cognition and team process behaviors and that underlies team performance.

Panel A represents traditional collective views of team cognition. Panel B represents a more process-oriented holistic view of team cognition.

The CERTT Lab is also a partner of the Cognitive Engineering Research
Institute (CERI). The institute develops solutions to problems in complex
socio-technical systems.
