About the CERTT Lab
The Cognitive Engineering
Research on Team Tasks (CERTT) Lab specializes in
identifying and researching problems associated with socio-technical systems.
What is cognitive engineering? It’s an approach to the design of complex cognitive systems that involves understanding cognition in context and applying this under-standing to create systems that are safer, easier to use, and more effective.
What is a socio-technical system? It is a mixture of people and technology interacting in a complex environment.
- What does the CERTT Lab do to study socio-technical systems?
- Conducts research on complex team tasks, such as command and control tasks, in order to understand the team cognition underlying collaboration, communication, coordination, and, ultimately, effective performance
- Develops methods for measuring team performance and cognition
- Develops models
of team coordination
Panel A represents traditional
collective views of team cognition. Panel B represents a more process-oriented
holistic view of team cognition.

The CERTT Lab is also a partner of the Cognitive Engineering Research
Institute (CERI). The institute develops solutions to problems in complex
socio-technical systems.
